Worth a look! posted on 2008-08-25
I have school qualifications and looking to work in France wanted to brush up and improve more than just basic 'get by' french.

I'm one month in and can say it is good. It teaches the way to speak french, not learn sentences! This makes it worthwhile. As it does this, it teaches you new vocabulary and refreshes old.

I think its worth a look and so far, doing what I expected of it.

Grammar intensive, very comprehensive posted on 2008-02-06
If you want French for a short holiday or business trip, then this is NOT the best book to buy. In that case I would recommend something like "Teach Yourself Instant French". However, if you have a more advanced interest in the French language and improving your competency in it, then this book is a sound investment at a very good "price-paid-to-skills-gained" ratio. This will be good for fine tuning and polishing your French studies.

I bought this job before taking a job in the European parliament, and found that it greatly improved my knowledge of French. This will be good for A level students and others with an advanced interest in the language who need it significantly "polished" to give it a professional edge.

The book has a number of clear strengths. One is the excellent run down of grammar, from verb tenses to negation to noun genders. Another is the excellent end of unit tests where the previous four chapters knowledge is tested. There are also plenty of exercise questions in each chapter to really drill home the skills learned.

The book does have one major weakness. The exercise questions sometimes are a little unclear: for example you may be asked to translate "you want it" and it is unclear to the reader if it means you (vous) or you as directed at the reader, which would be I (je). This can be a little irritating. Another weakness is the transliteration, where the book attempts to spell out phonetically what certain French words sound like, and this is not always very accurately done. Therefore, be sure you buy the CDs as well.

All in all the book is a good, and having worked in French speaking countries, I can testify that it is a sound investment for those with an advanced interest in the language who need their French fine tuned. For those with a more casual interest in the language or who need a holiday phrases course, then look elsewhere.

This course is fantastic. If you want a pure parrot CD course then this is not for you. I have learnt/relearnt material in only one week that took several months at school and the books are very logically structured. I think the problem other people have is the desire to rush... and this course represents rushing at as fast a pace as is physically possible unless you have some extreme skills. A friend of mine who had attended Eton was given six months to learn GCSE Russian and this was regarded as ample while doing another eleven O-levels. So, an hour a day spent on Hugo French over three months while doing a job you're probably very good at is peanuts. You get a lot of grammar in this course and that's what you need, along with the CDs, if you want to communicate, read and write effectively. It has a thoughtful and very clear presentation leading someone to probably GCSE level. Voila! C'est un grand livre. Achetez-le!

Having just started a Spanish degree, I thought I'd try my hand at French, which I did badly at in my GCSEs 5 years ago. By using this book I was able to use constructions way ahead of the level expected. This is because the book gives you the information you need to learn how to speak French, whereas most textbooks give you a few phrases in an illogical manner.
Do not be surprised if this book challenges you- some chapters seem very difficult and will make you sweat, but stick with it and you'll soon be rewarded by speaking kick-ass French. I'm on week 8 now and my reward for finishing week 12 will be the advanced CD edition so I can pronounce the stuff better.
This book is the best way to learn French solidly, and, at five pounds, an absolute bargain. Oh yes.

Puts schools to shame! posted on 2005-10-29
Having studied French for 3 years at school and Spanish to A-Level recently, I can truthfully say that I have learnt more in just a few hours of using this book than I ever learned in several years of language lessons at school. I've also studied a little German, Italian, Dutch and Greek in my spare time using a wide range of different methods, so I have good basis for comparison. No other self-study kit that I've tried matches up to the "Hugo in 3 months" series. This range of language study kits explains everything in a clear, concise manner, giving easy-to-read lists of verb conjugations, grammar rules and vocabulary. After each short section on a particular grammar point, there's an exercise for you to complete, which is what really helps you to remember what you've just learnt. The great thing about this course is that it really places an emphasis on the grammar, enabling you to construct sentences for yourself, rather than relying on the ready-made phrases that schoolteachers and phrasebooks give you. None of this "verbal participation" nonsense either - you'd be amazed at just how much you can learn without actually having to say a word to anyone! Being familiar with the GCSE and A-Level language syllabi, I would say that completing this self-study course (and understanding everything covered) would bring the student up to the equivalent of GCSE standard. If you're looking for something more advanced, then there's always the "Hugo Advanced French" course, which follows on from this one. So if you enjoy learning things logically, this is the course for you! Highly recommended.
